Gabiley Mayor Commends Hargeisa Water Agency's Excellence
During a recent visit to Hargeisa, Mayor Abdirashid Haybe Faarax of Gabiley led a delegation on a discovery mission to learn from the success of the Hargeisa Water Agency. The visit, which coincided with the inauguration of a new borehole, provided Mayor Faarax with a firsthand look at an institution he believes should be a role model for all government bodies in Somaliland. His commendation focused on two core pillars of the agency's success: its operational model of good governance and its commitment to a highly skilled, merit-based workforce.
Mayor Faarax's admiration for the agency was profound and clear. He stated, “Truly, I would like to compliment the Hargeisa water agency as a role model for the government institution for Somaliland. How the Hargeisa Water Agency currently operates is how all government institutions in the republic of Somaliland should look like; it's truly a model to follow.” He noted that through careful observation, his delegation witnessed a "deep understanding of governance" and a team of "skilled employees working tirelessly to achieve the immense task of providing water to Hargeisa." This recognition of the agency's structural integrity and tireless work ethic highlights a standard of public service that the mayor intends to champion within his own municipality.
A key factor that particularly impressed Mayor Faarax was the agency's commitment to building a workforce based on merit. He highlighted the fact that “Almost 90% of the skilled employees working on this rig are Somalilanders selected on the basis of merit and how much knowledge they have.” This commitment to selecting the most qualified individuals, he observed, is a direct contributor to the agency's operational excellence. The mayor also had the opportunity to meet some of the highest-scoring university graduates who have found employment within the agency, confirming that the organization prioritizes expertise and talent. This practice of merit-based hiring ensures that the agency is not only efficient but also fosters a culture of professionalism and continuous improvement.
In his remarks, Mayor Faarax effectively summarized the key elements of a thriving public institution. He saw in the Hargeisa Water Agency a perfect blend of strong governance, strategic investment, and a dedicated, highly skilled workforce chosen for their knowledge. The agency's success, underscored by the inauguration of the new borehole, serves as an inspiring blueprint for Gabiley and other cities seeking to improve their own public services and create a more prosperous future for their communities.
