Hargeisa’s ongoing efforts to secure a sustainable water supply have taken a major step forward with the inauguration of a new borehole in the Darasalam District. This is the fifth of six boreholes planned for the second phase of the Hargeisa Water Expansion Project, and it promises to significantly increase the city’s water production. This achievement not only highlights strategic engineering and investment but also underscores a powerful sense of community and regional cooperation.

The new borehole, as detailed by Engineer Abdalla Sacad, is a testament to careful planning and effective execution. Drilled to a final depth of 230 meters, with water first reached at a shallow depth of just 45 meters, the borehole boasts an impressive production rate of 60 cubic meters per hour. This substantial output is a crucial addition to the city's water infrastructure. The success of this project is rooted in the Hargeisa Water Agency’s foresight, particularly its investment in its own drilling rig. Engineer Khalif Abdilahi Hussein emphasized this point, noting that the agency’s ownership of the rig has been pivotal. He invoked the Somali proverb, “Sacabadada biya lagaga dharga,” which means you get satisfied only with what you achieve on your own. This independence has allowed the agency to maintain control over the project's timeline and budget, ensuring its continued progress.

Beyond the technical and financial aspects, the project is a powerful example of community collaboration. The Darasalam District Chairman extended heartfelt congratulations to the Hargeisa Water Agency employees for their unwavering dedication. General Manager Mohamed Ali Darood further highlighted that the project’s success would not have been possible without the support of the public. He expressed gratitude to the farm owners who generously donated their private land for the drilling sites. This spirit of cooperation demonstrates a collective commitment to the well-being of Hargeisa’s residents, a vital component of the project's success.

With the completion of this fifth borehole, the Hargeisa Water Agency is nearing the end of the drilling phase. The next steps, as outlined by the General Manager, involve connecting these new boreholes and integrating them into the existing Geedeeble reservoirs. This crucial connection work has already begun, with a detailed plan presented to the President of Somaliland. The project has also drawn the attention of neighboring regions, with a delegation from Gabiley attending the inauguration to learn from Hargeisa’s successful water infrastructure development. This visit underscores the project’s role as a model for other communities facing similar water challenges. The Hargeisa Water Agency’s commitment to delivering a sustainable water supply, despite the difficulties involved, serves as an inspiring example of effective public service and community partnership.
